COWabunga!

When the weather gets warm, our cows have a favorite way to cool down: a nice dip in the pond. That's right! They love going for a swim on a hot summer day just like you and I. During the hottest parts of the year, it is important that farmers make sure their livestock have access to shade whether it be from a barn with air flow or a patch of trees to keep them out of the sun. It is also important to repeatedly check their tank to make sure they have access to fresh, clean water- this is vital everyday, not just when it is hot. Cows feel the effects of increased temperature more than us. This is especially true for our Belted Galloways, who are known for their long, thick hair. If your cattle do not have access to a body of water, consider rinsing them down with the hose for 20-30 minutes when it is hot outside. Constantly observe your herd for signs of heat stress so that you can take action if you notice one of the cows feeling sick. Ellen Crawford from the NDSU Extension Service notes that "cattle are at danger of death from heat exposure when: the heat index is 75 or greater for a 72-hour period; the heat index during a 48-hour period is not lower than 79 during the day and not lower than 75 during the night; the daytime heat index reaches 84 or higher for two consecutive days."

Signs of heat stress include:

  • increased open mouth breathing (panting)

  • decreased activity

  • decreased food intake

  • slobbering

  • agitation and restlesness

It is important to watch your cattle to make sure they are happy and healthy year-round! Enjoy your summer and remember that the cows enjoy to swim too!
