What is all black with a white middle and taste delicious? It has got to be an Oreo cookie right? I suppose that is a good answer, but not what I was thinking. Belted Galloway cattle are often referred to as the 'Oreo cows' or 'belties' because of the white stripe that wraps around their bellies. Although most known for their black and white combination, belties can be red or dun colored as well. The breed itself originated from Scotland where a tough cow was needed to withstand cold and rainy weather. Belties are also known for their long curly locks and the unique attribute of being naturally polled. As a generally smaller breed, they are ideal for someone who is looking for cattle that may take up less room or be easier to handle because of their size. Typically a mature Belted Galloway of 3 or 4 years of age weighs about 1100-1300 pounds while a mature Herford cow averaged 1419 pounds. Another aspect of these cattle that makes them special is their quality of meat. Beef from belties is considered to be low in saturated fat and well marbled, which means that they still produce tasty meat despite containing less of the unhealthier fat. Because of their thick, hairy coats Belted Galloways bodies retain less fat since they do not require that extra layer of insulation to keep them warm. As a result belties have a dressing percentage of over 60 meaning that the live weight reflects of higher proportion of the carcass weight. I love my Belted Galloway cattle and enjoy raising such a beautiful breed. I thank my grandma for teaching me everything I know about the cows and life on the farm.
